EIGHT
DEACON
I held tight to Asherâs hand as I dragged him down the dim hallway toward my room. Iâd been clinging to him since heâd appeared in that parking lot like a mirage, and I wasnât going to let him go until I knew Iâd fixed things with us.
Or ever, really.
It had only been about three weeks since weâd broken up, but it may as well have been three years. I had no idea how Iâd thought I was going to be able to just move on from him and go about my normal life. Asher was in my bloodâin my soulâand he was mine.
The thought of letting him go, only for him to become someone elseâs made me want to burn the entire world to the ground.
We reached my room, and I pulled him inside and slammed the door.
Then I pressed him up against the closed door.
âAsher,â I said with a low growl. âStay here tonight.â
That was not what Iâd intended to say, but it was definitely what came out.
Fortunately, he just rolled his big blue eyes at me and chuckled. âWeâll see.â He put a gentle hand on my chest to push me off of him, and then he gave me a sexy little smirk as he walked me backwards until the back of my legs hit my bed. âSit, please.â
I did, though I would remind him later not to get used to giving orders when we were in my bedroom.
He gave me an indulgent smile, like he was proud of me for following instructions, and then he backed away a few steps before he dropped to the floor, curling his long legs under himself while he stared at me expectantly.
âI want to know why youâve changed your mind,â he said. âAssuming thatâs what this is about. If it isnâtâif this is just about getting me away from my homecoming dateâthen Iâm leaving, Deacon. I mean it.â
âI know,â I replied quickly. âThatâs not why I wanted to see you.â
His eyebrows rose in the worldâs most skeptical look.
âFine, thatâs not primarily why I wanted to see you,â I amended. âIâm serious about trying to⦠fix this. Fix us.â
His face softened as he nodded, urging me to continue.
I made sure I was looking him right in those bottomless blue eyes. âIâm sorry, Asher. Iâm sorry I reacted the way I did when you revealed what you are. I know you only did it because you saw a real future for us together. I canât imagine what it was like for you, having to hide who you are from me for our entire relationship.â
He was already getting teary-eyed, and I wasnât going to make it much longer without launching myself off this bed and wrapping my entire body around his if he carried on. He sniffed as he said, âWeâre all used to hiding who we are as we coexist with humans. But yesâthe harder I fell for you, the worse it was.â
âIâm sorry that I called you a liar,â I added because that had been shitty of me.
